Fosfens is a contemporary artisan lighting house where precision engineering meets the poetry of light.
Born from a legacy of master craftsmanship and enriched by creative collaborations with visionary designers like Ingo Maurer and Yvan Péard, Fosfens transforms human stories into luminous works of art.
Each piece is crafted with the exactitude of fine mechanics and the freedom of artistic expression.
From heritage to innovation, Fosfens illuminates spaces with elegance, emotion, and soul.
Fosfens is a contemporary artisan lighting house with roots that reach far deeper than its founding date. Born from decades of mastery in precision engineering, fine craftsmanship, and artistic vision, Fosfens unites the exactitude of mechanical expertise with the creative freedom of light as an art form.
The story begins in 1970, when Stevan Bijelic left his homeland for Paris at just seventeen, carrying little more than an unwavering passion for watchmaking and hand-crafted precision. His talent quickly earned him recognition among the capital’s most skilled artisans, leading to collaborations in the most demanding fields — aerospace, medical engineering, and luxury manufacturing — industries where perfection is the only standard.
This devotion to meticulous detail passed naturally to his son, Milan Bijelic, who spent over fifteen years pioneering LED technology within global corporations. Over time, he felt called to explore light not just as technology, but as a living, sensory, almost musical material. Together with his wife Elena, Milan founded Fosfens — not as a brand, but as a true maison : a place of transmission, creation, and deliberate craftsmanship.
In every Fosfens piece, you will find the harmony of engineering precision and luminous artistry. Inspired by the phosphene — the glow behind closed eyes, the light that remains when all else fades — our luminaires inhabit the delicate space between the visible and the intimate.
At Fosfens, light is never just a product — it is a living language shaped by human stories. Our founder, Milan Bijelic, draws inspiration from the people he meets, much like Jimi Hendrix once said, “From the people.”
This belief has guided his journey, from collaborations with visionary masters to lifelong friendships with pioneers in lighting design.
In 2015, Milan began a creative dialogue with Ingo Maurer, the
poetic alchemist of light. Their shared vision — a light that is alive, emotional, and free — became a guiding star for Fosfens. Ingo’s words still echo: “Later I realized that the light itself is much more important than the form.” Today, every Fosfens luminaire carries this legacy, crafted with precision yet never constrained.
Equally influential is Milan’s 25-year friendship with Yvan Péard, founder of Ayrton and a leader in the world of entertainment lighting.
Their bond goes beyond technology — united by a passion for beauty, precision, and timeless design. While Ayrton revolutionized stage lighting worldwide, Fosfens brings that same spirit of innovation into architectural spaces, creating luminous compositions that blend elegance and technical mastery.
Fosfens is the meeting point of heritage and innovation, where personal connections become the soul of our creations. Every light we design holds within it the warmth of friendships, the wisdom of mentors, and the promise of a shared future.
At Fosfens, a luminaire is more than a functional object — it is a living piece of design, craftsmanship, and legacy. Every creation is covered by our lifetime guarantee, a promise rooted in absolute trust: no forms, no receipts, no waiting. This is the natural extension of our uncompromising standards, where each piece is instantly recognizable for both its character and the bond we share with those who choose it.
A French Lighting House
Every Fosfens luminaire is entirely designed, machined, and assembled in France, in close collaboration with local partners who share our values of excellence, precision, and respect for true craftsmanship. Each piece carries the living memory of French artisanal heritage, while embracing innovation and the future of light.
Packaging as an Art Form
We treat packaging as part of the work itself. Each luminaire is shipped in a handcrafted wooden crate, identical to those used by museums for transporting works of art. This is not a luxury add-on — it is our way of honoring and protecting what will be passed on, marking the arrival of each piece as one would welcome a rare collector’s object.
Precision Meets Poetry
Guided by the words of Stevan Bijelic — “ Play is the soul of mechanics.” — Fosfens creates luminaires built to last, and to be inherited. We combine high-precision engineering with visual poetry, selecting noble materials like aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, and titanium for their strength and tactile beauty. Five-axis CNC machining sets the foundation, but it is always the artisan’s hand that applies the final touch — sanding, polishing, revealing the soul of the material. Our finishes — satin, microblasted, or polished — are protected by treatments from the aerospace industry, ensuring durability against corrosion, scratches, and oxidation, while giving each piece a deep, enduring tone. At Fosfens, we do not produce in mass — we create with meaning.
