About the Domaine:

The Domaine des Hospices de Nuits, founded in 1270, predates the Hospices de Beaune by nearly two centuries. Like its Beaune counterpart, this philanthropic and charitable institution was established to ensure its survival through the generosity of local wealthy families who donated vineyards. The concept was one of mutual benefit—families donated land to the Hospices in exchange for the promise of care and support.

While the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits is smaller than its Beaune counterpart, it still boasts 12.5 hectares of prime vineyards located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Premier Cru, and Gevrey-Chambertin, all renowned for producing exceptional wines. Barrels of wine from the Domaine are sold during an auction, held on the third Sunday of March at the prestigious Château du Clos Vougeot. Purchasing these barrels is not just a wine investment but a contribution to a noble cause, supporting the institution's charitable work while celebrating exceptional wines, culture, and the art of living in the Burgundy region.

Elevage (Aging Process):

The Domaine is currently headed by Jean-Marc Moron, who, trained by the renowned Roland Masse, brings expertise and dedication to producing wines of exceptional quality. Like the Hospices de Beaune, the wines sold at auction are very young, harvested only a few months prior to the event.

Once the auction takes place, the wines need proper aging to reach their full potential. In our case, my father, who has been in the wine-aging profession for more than 35 years, takes on the crucial role of aging the barrels. Over the course of 16 to 18 months, my family carefully nurtures the wines, respecting the terroir, the nuances, and the complexities of the wines to bring out their best characteristics. This aging process allows the wines to evolve and express the unique qualities of the prestigious Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin appellations.

Tasting notes:

A very beautiful color. Pretty nose, frank and balanced with notes of backcurrant and liquorice. Beautiful substance on the palate, purity, elegant tannins and a long finish already.
